Job Description
An established construction and development contractor is looking to appoint an Assistant Buyer / Surveyor to join its commercial team based in Ringwood.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with buying or procurement experience within construction who is keen to broaden their commercial knowledge and develop into quantity surveying. You'll work closely with an experienced Commercial Manager, gaining exposure to both procurement and commercial management across a varied portfolio of residential developments and refurbishment projects.
Assistant Buyer / Surveyor - The Role
As an Assistant Buyer / Surveyor, your primary responsibility will be supporting the procurement of subcontractors and construction materials while gradually taking on additional quantity surveying duties as your experience develops.
Working within a close-knit commercial team, you'll be involved throughout the project lifecycle, helping to ensure projects are procured efficiently, remain commercially successful and are delivered on programme.
The role is predominantly office-based with regular visits to live construction sites.
Assistant Buyer / Surveyor Responsibilities
- Procuring subcontractors and construction materials.
- Obtaining competitive quotations and negotiating with suppliers and subcontractors.
- Preparing enquiries, tender documentation and purchase orders.
- Assisting with subcontract procurement and administration.
- Supporting the commercial management of projects from procurement through to final account.
- Assisting with valuations, variations and subcontract payments.
- Monitoring project costs and supporting monthly commercial reporting.
- Maintaining procurement schedules and commercial records.
- Issuing updated drawings and technical information to suppliers and subcontractors.
- Attending project and commercial meetings.
- Visiting sites to monitor progress and ensure procurement aligns with programme requirements.
Assistant Buyer / Quantity Surveyor Candidate Requirements
This opportunity would suit someone already working as an Assistant Buyer, Construction Buyer, Assistant Quantity Surveyor or within a commercial support role who is looking to develop their career further.
You'll be organised, commercially aware and confident building relationships with suppliers, subcontractors and site teams.
Ideally you'll have:
- Experience within a construction buying, procurement or commercial role.
- Knowledge of subcontractor procurement and material purchasing.
- An interest in developing quantity surveying skills and responsibilities.
- Strong communication and negotiation skills.
- Excellent organisational abilities with good attention to detail.
- A relevant construction qualification (or be working towards one) would be advantageous.
